VLC Media Player 1.1.8 for Mac OS X 0

VLC Player for Mac OS X has reached version 1.1.8, an update mainly designed to offer an additional layer of security for avid users of the media player. OS X users also get a fresh new UI.

Preliminary tests carried out by Softpedia show a change in font color in the playlist, as well as more pronounced edges around the player’s controls and panels.

The same tweaks seem to have rubbed off on the equalizer as well.


However, the 1.1.8 update is focused on security and bug fixes, VideoLAN developers said.

Specifically, the update patches a bug which affected “video width concerning some demuxers”.

Support for a new Dirac encoder has been added based on libschroedinger, and auto-detection for .txt subtitles is fixed.

“Major updates” have been carried out in most language translations as well. The rest of the enhancements (including Windows-specific fixes) are listed below:

· Notable updates in .mp4, .ogg, .ape demuxers

Another bug patched by the VideoLAN team, though not specifically documented in the release notes, the app doesn’t fail to quit immediately after right clicking its icon in the dock and selecting “quit.”

The last time we reported on VLC for Mac was back in February when the popular open source media player turned 10.

The event was marked with the release of VLC 1.1.7, which also focused on security, albeit small new features, and many other bug fixes were also implemented.

VLC media player is a free and open-source media player and multimedia framework coded by the folks behind the VideoLAN project.

No worries, if you really want to convert an entire DVD-movie in the highest format available, you can check "shutdown computer when conversion completed" and leave the Mac on during the conversion. Other smaller resolutions and formats would take significantly less time.

Pluses: The software works flawlessly, exactly as advertised. Some of the best default settings for conversion I ever encountered. 

Drawbacks / flaws: The software does not and will not read dmg/iso files. You have to load/mount them and after that, choose a path to the disk. Be very careful, ripping a DVD makes the disk work more than usual, some disks might overheat. (in my tests after 5min conversion from DVD to 720p Apple TV - maximum - the disk was hot when I ejected it
